May Favourites

may text

May, my birthday month, has come and gone, but not without some new favourites. Here they are, in no particular order:

Semisumo Hi-Shine Lo-Hold Pomade – Bumble & Bumble

I first saw this product mentioned in one of EssieButton’s videos, and I was really curious about it. I’ve always steered clear of hair pomades and waxes because they usually weigh my hair down (because it’s quite fine even though there’s a ton of it) however flyaways are also the bane of my hair-existence, and EssieButton said that Semisumo worked for hers, so I thought I’d give it a go. And it totally works. I use it after blow-drying, to tame my flyaways and also to define the slight curls that my hair likes to create at the ends.

Turquoise Beauty Products

This one’s a two-parter! This month there’s a lighter shade of turquoise that’s been popping up in my favourite beauty products. I’ve always loved turquoise jewelry, and it feels like just the right shade to transfer from spring to summer. The cool, refreshing, blue-green tones are warmed up with a hint of gold underneath in these products:

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in “Turquoise”

I love the felt-tip style of Stila’s liquid eye liners, and their classic black is my go-to for a solid cat-eye, so I was excited to try this lighter shade. It’s as easy to apply as their other liners, really does last all day, and adds a pretty pop of colour to your eyes, without being overpowering. I think that this shade is exclusive to Sephora but let me know if you’ve found it anywhere else!

“Turquoise & Caicos” Essie Nail Polish

This is a slightly warmer shade than the Stila eye liner, but just as gorgeous. I’m actually wearing it in my Morning Phase Record Review video!

“Grace: A Memoir” by Grace Coddington

This book is beautiful. Beautifully written, beautifully put-together, and beautifully illustrated. You may know Grace Coddington from the documentary The September Issue, where she really stood out as the only person brave enough to take Anna Wintour on. Even though her work at American Vogue is amazing, she had been creating and doing wonderful things in fashion for years before then, and I was mesmerized by her life story. The casual name-dropping (she used to party with Vidal Sassoon, so? Karl Lagerfeld’s a close friend, what of it?), the gorgeous line-drawings, and the sheer volume of living that Coddington has done is inspiring. As a cat-lover I was also pleased to see an entire chapter dedicated to her various feline friends! I think the unsung hero of the memoir is Michael Roberts, who co-wrote it with Coddington. His charmingly witty style captures her zest for life, and easily translates the most esoteric fashion moments into more universal ideas. I couldn’t put it down until I finished it, and I absolutely recommend it if you’re looking for a summer read!

St. Tropez Gradual Tan Everyday Body

st tropez copyThis has pretty much been my summer lifesaver after a painfully long New York winter. When I first shed my tights my skin was a touch translucent, and since the city climate tends to shift pretty unforgivingly from freezing to intense summer heat I knew I needed some help. I really like the shade St. Tropez goes – it’s more golden than orange – and this everyday product gradually builds up a tan so it doesn’t look like an obvious change. They also did something to their formula a couple of years ago so that it no longer has that biscuit-y smell – now it actually smells alright. Good job guys.

I recently discovered this New York artistic institution, and I just wish that I had found it earlier! They offer incredibly decently-priced classes for all levels in all art disciplines, as well as workshops and shows. The school, on 57th St, is packed with studios and feels like one of the last truly bohemian parts of the city. I’ve been taking a life drawing class and have met some awesome people – if you’re in the area and are looking to take up (or get back into) your favourite art then check it out.

NAKED3 Palette – Urban Decay

I know I’m a little late to the Naked3 Fan Club, but I had to put this palette in my favourites this month because I am rather obsessed. Since I got it earlier this month I haven’t worn any other eye shadows! The colours are all warm rose-gold shades which are my favourite to wear, and there’s a great mix of matte/satin/shimmer, and even a more glittery shade (“Blackheart”) thrown in there at the end. I’m definitely going to do a more in-depth review with some swatches and looks later this month so watch out for that!

That’s all for this month – what did you love this May?
